Early Days

Indian motorcycles have their origin with a bicycle company called Hendee Manufacturing Company. In 1901, this company began to build gas-powered bicycles. In the years following, the first motorcycle models under the Indian name were manufactured. More advancements followed, including V-twin engines, loop frames, and innovative models.

The 1920s

The Indian Scout model is one of the most legendary Indian models. It was first produced in 1919 but received an update in 1928. The new Series 101 Indian Scout came with a 750cc V-twin engine, a longer wheelbase, and a lower seat. The company added the Indian Chief and Indian Big Chief models to its motorcycle lineup in the 1920s.

WWII

During World War II, Indian created Model 841 for the United States Army. Because the focus remained on war production, fewer motorcycle models were built and sold to consumers. But soon after the war ended, Indian introduced two new models to its lineup. The Indian Arrow and Indian Scout were sportier by design and were very lightweight.

Halt in Operations

Unfortunately for fans of this iconic motorcycle, Indian discontinued production of all their models in 1953. In the intervening years, however, Indian did not lose its place in the history books of motorcycle history. Burt Munro set a world record on a modified Indian Scout motorcycle in 1967.

The company did not return to operations in the 20th century. They declared bankruptcy in 2003. The company and its name have been sold numerous times following the bankruptcy.

Resurgence in 2011

Polaris Industries bought Indian in 2011. This acquisition was exciting news for fans of Indian motorcycles because iconic models like the Indian Scout can be found on the market again. You can buy a brand-new Indian motorcycle with updated designs and features once more.
