UTVs are great for both exploring off-road and doing utility work around your property, among other things. However, a poorly maintained machine won’t perform as well or last as long. Neglecting UTV maintenance can eventually even lead to an accident. That’s why the experts at Big St. Charles Motorsports have created this guide to important UTV maintenance tasks.

Coolant

Coolant is the substance that prevents your UTV’s engine from overheating. If you find yourself needing to replace the coolant a little too often, start checking under your UTV from time to time. You may have a leak on your hands. Besides regularly replacing the coolant, you should also take a look at the coolant itself to make sure that it’s still in good condition.

Spark Plugs

Spark plugs provide the initial spark to get your engine running. If your engine isn’t turning over the way that it should, check the spark plug. Disconnect your battery and remove the engine cover. Be sure to use a spark plug wrench when you take out the plug to avoid damaging it. As you inspect the spark plug, make sure that the metal gaps are clean and dry and that the ceramic casing is intact. If you have the right know-how, you can attempt to replace the spark plug. If you don’t, it’s best to contact a mechanic.

Change the Oil

Oil lubricates the moving parts in your UTV’s engine so that they glide across each other rather than grinding together. Be sure to inspect your oil on a regular basis. Black, sludgy oil is too old to do its job, while oil that feels gritty to the touch is full of metal shavings. If you notice the latter, it may indicate that some internal damage has already occurred. When you go to change your UTV’s oil, don’t forget to swap out the oil filter as well.
