Riding in the Snow with Your UTV
Snow is just around the corner, or it’s already here for some of us! That’s why some of you are probably getting your UTV ready for snow riding. Using your machine doesn’t have to stop just because the weather changes. You’ll still be able to ride it around your property to help with projects or enjoy some of your favorite trails. But you’ll need to take some important preparatory steps to ensure you and your side-by-side are ready for the unique riding conditions.
That’s why Big St. Charles Motorsports has provided some tips for getting ready for some winter riding. You can also stop by our premier UTV dealer location in St. Charles, Missouri, for additional tips and advice. We welcome all those from St. Louis and St. Peters, so visit us today!
Prepare Your UTV for the Cold
Everything you do is going to be about preparing for the snow and the cold. Even if you live in an area that doesn’t see consistent snow, it’s better to do these things now while it’s less of a hassle and you can block out some time. The changes might include switching out certain engine fluids with winter-specific products, to keep them from freezing in extreme temperatures. This probably won’t be a big concern for many of us, but it can’t hurt to be too cautious or to at least check the engine fluids before you start riding.
There are also winter upgrades you can install to make the season a little easier to get through. This can include things like a snowplow attachment to clear your driveway or other areas of your property. There are also snow tires, which will give you better traction in slick conditions. You can even think about opting for tracks for ultimate performance perks.
Also, given the declining weather, we highly recommend investing in a cover for when you’re riding. This can help protect you from the cold, wind, and precipitation as you try to get work done or enjoy an afternoon ride.
Staying Warm
Next, you’ll want to focus on you. It’s going to be cold out there, especially as the side-by-side gets moving and the wind starts to chafe at your skin. The first line of defense against the cold is what you wear. Of course, the standard safety gear is still a must, including your helmet, but your summer suit might not be as practical.
Layering is your best bet at staying warm. It creates better insulation for you and can make it easy to cool off if you get too hot. You’ll also want to make sure everything is waterproof. The wetter you are, the harder it is to stay warm. This might include proper snow pants and a snow jacket.
Good Snow Safety Practices
Once you’re ready to go and you’re out in the snow, you’ll want to adjust your riding habits so you’re still riding safely in these unique conditions. Even with all your upgrades, slick conditions can cause you to lose traction. That’s why you’ll want to reel in the speed, especially when you’re making a turn.
You’ll also need to watch out for ice. Ice can sometimes be difficult to spot, but if you can, try to go around all icy patches, especially if the weather’s been warming up recently. Finally, take care of your body so you can stay alert and focused. Eat well, stay hydrated, get lots of rest, and always ride sober.
With the right end of year strategy, we’re positive you’ll be able to enjoy riding your side-by-side all year long.
