Safety Tips for Taking Your Child on a UTV Ride
A UTV can accommodate multiple passengers, which means it can be used to go trail riding with your child. But before you hit the trail, it's important to set yourself up for a safe ride.
Here at Big St. Charles Motorsports, we strive to make your life easier. We created the following guide to safely take your child on a side-by-side adventure. For more safety tips or to shop UTVs for sale, visit our dealership in St. Charles, MO.
Look Up the Laws
There are state laws regarding age requirements for UTV passengers. Most states require that children be at least 12 years old to ride in a side-by-side. Some states will also have other requirements. For example, passengers need to be properly restrained with their backs against a seat while still being able to reach a handhold. For many states, these laws won't apply on private land. But these laws are there for a reason – to keep young riders safe. It's wise to still follow these restrictions on your own property.
Get Properly Fitting Safety Gear
All passengers need safety gear for riding a UTV, including children. It's not enough to simply be wearing any old helmet and eye protection gear. The gear needs to fit properly in order to provide proper protection. Other necessary pieces of safety gear include sturdy footwear, full-length outerwear, and gloves. You can also consider a neck collar to prevent strain on bumpy rides.
Consider Upgrading Your UTV
There are ways to upgrade your side-by-side to make riding safer for your child. One common upgrade is to add handholds. These are affordable to buy and easy to attach to the roll cage. Another popular upgrade is to switch from a standard 3-point harness to a 4-point or 5-point harness, which will be safer for kids. Harnesses with wide padded straps will be more comfortable and are a wise choice.
Establish Rules for Safe UTV Riding
Go over safety rules with your child before they go on a ride.
For example:
- Don't get into the UTV alone.
- Keep hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times.
- Wear the safety gear and harness at all times.
