Like with any powersports vehicle, it’s important that you wear a helmet while riding your snowmobile. Snowmobile helmets are very similar to the helmets worn by those who ride ATVs or UTVs, with some obvious additions like extra insulation. For help finding the right snowmobile helmet for your needs, consult this guide from Big St. Charles Motorsports.

Protection

DOT and Snell certifications indicate that a snowmobile helmet will provide your head with adequate protection against impacts. However, snowmobile helmets need to protect against more than just blunt force. Make sure that whichever snowmobile helmet you end up purchasing has enough insulation to keep your head warm without making things feel too hot.

Visibility

Cold conditions can lead to your helmet fogging up and impairing your vision. We recommend using a dual-pane visor, breath box, chin curtain, or air vents to help keep things clear. You’ll also need some form of UV protection to prevent snow blindness.

Helmet Styles

There are four major snowmobile helmet types: modular, full-face, snocross, and dual-sport.

Modular

Modular helmets come equipped with breath boxes and snow shields. They are favored by snowmobile riders that wear glasses because the entire front part of the helmet can flip up when needed. Some modular helmets have built-in extras, such as sun visors and pockets to store communications equipment.

Full-Face

Full-face helmets are very similar to modular helmets but don’t have a movable front section. These helmets come with breath boxes, dual lens shields, and sun visors while also offering the most protection of all the helmet types.

Snocross

Snocross helmets are very similar to motocross helmets. They are designed to be as light and freeing as possible, eschewing extra features in favor of simplicity. Since these helmets lack face shields, you’ll need to attach a breath box and find something to protect your eyes if you utilize a snocross helmet. .

Dual-Sport

Dual-sport helmets are a fairly new design. These helmets feature aspects from both full-face and snocross helmets, which is why they’re great for people who want a lighter helmet but also prefer to have a full face shield instead of goggles.
