The Essential Performance Upgrades for Your ATV

Nov. 29 2019 Miscellaneous By ___

Some ATV owners are perfectly fine riding the trails with their model as-is. After all, these machines roll out of the factory ready to divide and conquer. But there’s more you can do with your quad if you just know where to start. That’s why Big St. Charles Motorsports has provided some of the essential performance upgrades to get you started on a new world of ATV ownership. You might even realize you’re more into the mechanical side of ownership than you realized. You can also stop by our location in St. Charles, Missouri, for additional help, or to check out our ATVs for sale. We welcome all those from St. Louis and St. Peters.

Intake

The air intake can determine just how much fuel you’re able to feed into your engine, and ultimately, how much power your engine produces. Improving the airflow can be a big boost to your engines overall output and efficiency. There are a few ways you can improve the airflow, starting with getting a better air filter. The cleaner the air that you feed into your engine, the better it’ll run. You can also get something that’s less dense for better filtration.

If you’re looking to get more air into your engine, then you can ask about how to open up the airbox. This will allow for more air to get funneled in, although it can leave your engine vulnerable to moisture.

You can also upgrade your air intake to better suit the kind of riding you’ll do. If you know you’ll spend quite a bit of time mudding, or around areas with a lot of water, getting high-mounted air intakes can help keep water from reaching the essential parts of the engine. This can be a must-have upgrade for some riders, so ask us today about getting one installed.

Exhaust

At the other end of the machine, you can improve exhaust so all that additional airflow has somewhere to go once it’s used up. You can do this by changing the entire system or adding a new slip-on. This can be a little trickier when it comes to choosing parts that are compatible with your model, so consult a professional if you’re not quite sure what your options are.

You can also increase exhaust flow by lifting some of the restrictions that are built-in with your current setup. Not to say that stock performance is bad, as there’d be no reason to sell a quad that couldn’t run properly. But once you start tweaking certain areas of the machine, you’ll find the exhaust system no longer offers the performance you need. To avoid an engine backfire, you’ll want to improve your exhaust as you improve other parts of your engine.

Tires

While ATVs are built to handle all terrains (as their name suggests), stock tires are generally best suited for semi-compact dirt. This can mean you’ll see a dip in performance quality if you spend most of your time on looser material, like sand or mud or gravel. If you know this will be the primary terrain type you’ll ride on, there are tires that are more accommodating to these materials. You can even ask about snow tires as the weather starts to get colder.

These are just a handful of ways you can improve your ATV’s performance, but once you get started, you might find it hard to stop. As you continue to experiment and tweak your ride, you’ll want a trusted service department to have your back. That’s where Big St. Charles Motorsports comes in.
