Summers can get pretty hot; there’s no doubt about that. But you'll likely want to take advantage of the ample sunshine to do some recreational UTV (utility terrain vehicle) riding at a local trail or an off-roading park. It’s important to bear that heat in mind and do everything you can to stay cool so that you avoid dehydration, heat exhaustion, severe sunburns and heatstroke, which can all be serious health issues. Here’s what to do when taking your side-by-side out in the heat.

Dress Appropriately

UTV riding poses risks and you need to wear the proper safety gear to do it correctly. Long sleeves and pants made from lightweight and breathable fabrics can help you to stay cooler by preventing the sun from hitting your skin. Wear sunscreen on all exposed skin to prevent sunburn. And, of course, put on your helmet!

Ride at Strategic Times

Temperatures peak around 3 PM, so avoid those mid-afternoon rides. Instead, do your off-roading in the early morning or evening to avoid the highest temperatures. It’s also helpful to find shadier areas to ride in if your side-x-side doesn’t already have a canopy on it.

Take Frequent Breaks

Finally, it’s a good idea to take frequent breaks when riding your UTV to prevent fatigue. Rest in the shade or dip your feet in a cool stream. Take a walk and remove your helmet to cool off. Have some snacks and drink plenty of water. A fifteen-minute break can help you to be refreshed and ready to hit the road again.
