UTV Troubleshooting Guide
If you’re a UTV owner, it’s very important that you be able to diagnose basic maintenance issues. Once you understand the root cause of the problem, fixing it becomes so much easier. If you’re not sure where to start in regards to UTV troubleshooting, this guide from St. Charles Motorsports Group can help you get started.
Battery Issues
Your side by side’s battery is a crucial component, so being able to diagnose battery issues is critical. A UTV that is slow to start may be the result of the battery being dead or undercharged. Undercharged batteries can be recharged, while batteries that are dead or won’t recharge will need to be replaced. If this doesn’t help, the problem might be a poor terminal connection, in which case you should apply grease to the terminals, treat them with an anti-corrosive, and tighten them up.
Overheating
Another common UTV maintenance issue is the vehicle overheating too quickly. In most cases, this stems from a problem with the coolant system. If you find evidence of a corroded coolant flow path, flush the system and put in new coolant. Top up the coolant levels whenever they get low. Other possible causes of an overheating engine include a loose or broken radiator cap or a motor-driven fan that has stopped working. Replace/adjust these parts as needed and see if the problem has resolved itself.
Slow to Start
If a UTV’s engine is slow to start, the cause is likely low fuel flow. Inspect the fuel tank, filter, electric fuel pump, and injector. This problem can also be caused by a loose fuel tank cover allowing water to find its way into the fuel system. If that’s the case, you’ll have to drain out the fuel system and refill it. If everything about the fuel system comes up clean, check the battery.
