The Kawasaki® Powersports Lineup
Not every company can say it makes the things that keep the world turning, but Kawasaki® sure can, from their well-known powersports vehicles to aircraft engines and power plants. For 50 years, Kawasaki® Motors Corp. USA has pushed the limits of motorsports, defying convention and building products that have revolutionized the industry. From adventure hunters and thrill-seekers to daily grinders and weekend warriors, Kawasaki® looks forward to another 50 years of serving up great powersport vehicles to American customers.
American Origins
In 1966, American Kawasaki® Motorcycle Corp. was established on the principals of hard work underlined by the promise of a dream. Though building on a heritage and tradition of manufacturing in Japan that went back almost 70 years, they opened a humble factory in an old meat warehouse in Chicago to get started in the US market.
These intrepid businessmen had nothing on this continent — no customers, no distributors, and no image with which to sell themselves. However, the nascent American division of Kawasaki® did have a strong desire to succeed and a new factory to supply good parts and products. Their first motorcycles were small two-stroke bikes sold under the brand name Omega. American motorcycle riders were demanding more powerful bikes at the time, so Kawasaki® soon responded with two rotary valve twins named Samurai and Avenger. Additionally, these new bikes were sold under the Kawasaki® name, which only helped to solidify them as the start of something special.
Industry Pioneers
Kawasaki® launched the Mach III in 1969, which would forever their image as a premier sportbike maker around the world. By the time of the legendary Z1 in 1973, Kawasaki® was a major power in the motorcycle industry, and their American division was building its own unified distribution network to offer dealers and customers better service. They then diversified in the frontier of the watercraft industry with the Jet Ski® brand that would come to define the market. The 80s also saw further expansion with ATVs and UTVs.
Kawasaki® didn’t stop there. Their impact on the industry can be seen from the ubiquity of the Kawasaki® name, their brands known the world over, and the continued presence in the vehicle manufacturing industry.
