KTM® History

The company is an Austrian-based organization that launched during the 1930s. At the start, the initials stood for "Kraftfahrzeug Trunkenpolz Mattighofen." The word "Kraftfahrzeug" means “motor vehicle” in German. "Trunkenpolz" is a reference to founder Hans Trunkenpolz. Finally, "Mattighofen" is the small town that served as the company's headquarters.

At first, the company was a vehicle repair shop. Once World War II ended, there was less demand for repair operations, so the company focused on developing KTM® motorcycles instead. The first prototype emerged in 1951, called the R100. Soon, an investor named Ernst Kronreif became a shareholder, and the "K" in the company name signified his connection to the business.

When Kronreif and Trunkenpolz died in the early 1960s, Hans' son Erich became the company leader. He was instrumental in expanding the business and helping them branch out into the United States in 1978.

When Erich died in 1989, the company went through some changes and eventually became four separate organizations in 1992. By 2015, three of the four entities had been reunited.

The company is well-known for its off-road motorcycles. Some of the most popular lines are their Motocross, Cross-Country, Enduro, and Freeride models. Many competitions see a KTM® dirt bike claim victory. They offer the speed and agility needed to bring home the gold.

AMA Supercross Championship

Many KTM® motorcycles are made to compete. They are designed with a slender and lightweight focus to help promote tight turning and high speeds. At the company's first Motocross World Championship entry, they won the race! The next forty years saw them earning over 260 world championship titles. Their striking orange, black, and silver company colors make these bikes easy to recognize as they race across the finish line.
