History of Suzuki® Motorsports
For decades, Suzuki® has been one of the biggest names in motorsports. Their fast, sleek off-road vehicles and motorcycles have made a huge splash in the market and are beloved by adrenaline junkies the world over.
But how did Suzuki® get to where they are today? Big St. Charles Motorsports is your St. Louis Suzuki® motorsports dealer. Here’s a brief company history so you can learn more about the story behind this renowned Japanese manufacturer.
Suzuki® History
Company founder Michio Suzuki began the Suzuki Loom Works in 1909 to manufacture weaving looms and other textile machinery for Japan’s booming silk industry. However, by the 1930s, Suzuki® was ready to diversify its product offerings and as a result, the company developed its first automobile prototypes in 1937. These cars were built with liquid-cooled four-stroke engines that were made to be both efficient and powerful.
Suzuki® released its first motorcycle in 1952, called the Power Free, which had a small 36cc engine. Within a few years, the company was manufacturing over 6,000 bikes every single month as they continued to create and manufacture cars as well. Both of these industries helped Suzuki® find success and earn money at a time when the post-war economy was on a downturn, particularly in war-torn Japan. Once the war ended, they were well situated to break into powersports specific markets.
A Race-Winning Legacy
During the 1960s, motorcycle racers around the globe began to use Suzuki® bikes because of their reliable designs and powerful engines. Ernst Degner, a racer from East Germany, rode a 50cc Suzuki bike and won the 1962 World Championship Grand Prix with it. He even assisted Suzuki with their engine designs, helping to make them more powerful, before using the company’s bikes to win more titles.
Around the same time, New Zealand rider Hugh Anderson became a double world champion on Suzuki® bikes in 1963, riding their 50cc and 125cc models. Over the next several decades, Suzuki® motorcycles helped riders to win a number of global competitions and that streak continues to this day.
